SANTA CRUZ, CA - It is always exciting to report on a new launch in our industry. However, it gets even more exciting when that launch is positioned to support the Earth and increase sustainability within the supply chain. On a mission to do just that, Jacobs Farm del Cabo has launched a new paper-based clamshell under the del Cabo brand, providing shoppers with a useful alternative to single-use plastic clamshells.

Aaron Brookes, Director of Sales and Marketing, Jacobs Farm del Cabo“Consumers are connected, aware, and are demanding real and tangible evidence of social and environmental responsibility,” said Aaron Brookes, Director of Sales and Marketing. “Now that the tension has begun to loosen between packaging sustainability, functionality, and price, we are seeing an acceleration in new product innovation and the promise of greener alternatives.”

The new del Cabo paperboard pint pack is made with 100 percent recycled paperboard and offers a clear view of the product inside via a plant-based, cellulose window that is certified compostable, both commercially and in the comfort of shoppers’ own homes.

Jacobs Farm del Cabo will begin shipping its Sugar Plum Grape Tomatoes, Cherry Tomatoes, and Heirloom Medley Cherry Tomatoes in the new paperboard pack this spring. The implementation of the new packaging is expected to reduce Jacobs Farm del Cabo’s plastic waste by half a million pounds in this year alone, a press release explained.

“Plastic reduction is an important part of our broader climate change initiative, ClimateLab, designed to both mitigate our impact and help our farming communities develop the tools needed to face the implications of climate change,” Brookes added. “The introduction of paper-based clamshells is part of a steady shift toward more sustainable materials.”

The grower’s plastic reduction strategy goes beyond its new packaging and unique farming methods. Dedicated to growing organic food in a sustainable and socially responsible way, the company’s northern California farms use a flaming process that rids its fields of unwanted weeds, and is currently in the process of expanding a similar steaming process to its California organic basil greenhouses.

I’m sure this will not be the last sustainability-centered strategy enacted by Jacobs Farm del Cabo, so stay tuned with AndNowUKnow as we continue to report.
