BRAWLEY, CA – Legend Produce’s 2017 Origami cantaloupe is in peak production out of Brawley, CA and Yuma, AZ.
“Legend Produce’s Origami melon is currently being harvested for the 2017 domestic cantaloupe season,” Barry Zwillinger tells me. “As has been the case for the past couple years, we are one of the first out the gate, and the crop is showing excellent quality. We are very thankful that demand for Legend Produce’s Origami has increased over last year’s numbers.”
In response to the overwhelming demand, the company, along with its growing partners in Brawley and Yuma, has increased production every year since 2013. Legend has continued to build up volume and increase its contracts for Origami, in addition to a general increase in production by including early spring varieties and transplants.
“There is no other variety on the market that can match what the Origami does,” Barry adds. “It’s a full slip western shipper that provides an amazing aroma, high brix, a deep orange color, and a phenomenal unmatched flavor. Origami is a hearty melon with a small seed cavity that provides retailers with increased shelf-life and prevents spoilage on the other end to the consumer.”
May is always an exciting time for Legend Produce, Barry tells me, explaining that Origami is the only melon variety he’s seen that can be grown this early in the year without experiencing the same spoilage that other early varieties experience.
“You have the Caribbean harper-type cantaloupes that look good and have high brix, but the flavor and the aroma just aren’t there like in our western shippers,” Barry continues. “In-store retail sales have shown that consumers prefer Origami, and the retailers’ sales data year over year backs that up. We have retailers that are requesting only the Origami cantaloupe in their stores for the month of May.”
The Origami cantaloupe domestic harvest begins today! With Origami growing at all its farms, both in California and Arizona, you can count on Legend Produce to provide you with all your domestic cantaloupe needs throughout the entire season.
