The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have announced that the multi-state salmonella infections linked to Daniella mangoes from Mexico finally appears to be over.

According to officials, 127 people in the U.S. fell ill between July 3rd and Sept. 1st. Thirty-three hospitalizations but no deaths were linked to the outbreak. The final update also reported a three-state outbreak of a different strain of salmonella had sickened 16 people from July 19-Sept. 12, and was possibly connected to the larger outbreak. This reasoning was linked to the explanation that one individual was infected with both strains of salmonella.

Health officials in California began investigating the outbreak on Aug. 22, 2012. During the course of the investigation the FDA traced the mangoes back to Agricola Daniella of Sinaloa, Mexico.

On August 29, 2012, Splendid Products of Burlingame, California, voluntarily recalled certain lots of Daniella brand mangoes and on September 13, 2012, the FDA warned consumers against eating mangoes from Agricola Daniella. Testing by the FDA found Salmonella in mangoes from this producer in Mexico. On September 27, 2012, four distributors of mangoes imported from Agricola Daniella initiated recalls of mangoes received from Agricola Daniella...and the dominoes have fallen in numerous seen and unforeseen ways.

The FDA has placed Agricola Daniella mangoes on Import Alert. The alert denies the mangoes admissions into the United States unless the importer shows they are not contaminated with Salmonella.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
