<p>The University of California, Riverside has recently released a new hybrid which is a part pummel, part mandarin and part Ruby hybrid they call Valentine. The new variety resembles a large grapefruit with flesh similar to blood citrus, according to The Grower.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">The name Valentine was established to match the red heart the fruit resembles after being cut open lengthwise. The selections for the new fruit were part of crosses originally made in the 1950s which also resulted in Oroblanco and Melogold. A cross between Siamese Sweet pummel, Dancy Mandarin and Ruby blood orange, Valentine has a medium to dark yellow rind and a red seeded flesh.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">The pummel hybrid was evaluated by museum scientist Toni Siebert, staff research associate Otillia Bier, pomologist David Karp, Director of the Citrus Clonal Protection Program Georgios Vidalakis, and curator of UCR’s Citrus Variety Collection Tracy Kahn. </p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p><a class="btn btn-sm btn-primary col-lg-12" style="white-space: normal;" href="http://www.thegrower.com/news/UC-Riverside-releases-red-fleshed-pummelo-209279771.html " target="_new">The Grower Report </a></p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">
