<p style="text-indent:0px; line-height:12px;"><span style="font-weight:bold;line-height:130%"> Mexico & California</span><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">By Eric Anderson<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">3.21.13</p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><p><img src="https://cdn.andnowuknow.com/legacyWriterImages/hl_organic_avocados_BODY.jpg" alt="IMAGES 3-21-2013" />Organic avocado prices have recently spiked due to lack in supply.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">There has been a shortage of Mexican organic avocado production, which has caused prices for peak size organic avocados to reach $38 to $40 a box, compared to current non-organic prices which are hovering around $30 to $31 dollars a box.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">The cause of the shortage has been speculated to include a range of factors from increased domestic demand to isolated freezes.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Growers tell AndNowUKnow that although production in Oaxaca remains slightly short of expectations, production in Michoacán should start shortly and pick up any slack, ensuring promotional volumes are met for the Cinco de Mayo season.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">California production is picking up, however, and is likely to be the largest supplier for the next few months. The fruit could benefit from additional rains; however, which helps boost fruit size.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Supplies have been shifting between imported and domestic avocado production. Mexican conventional production is starting to dwindle as well, in accordance with typical seasonal shifts.</p><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">
