LOS ANGELES, CA - The popularity of watermelon keeps it in high demand. As we make our way through the end of summer here in the Northern Hemisphere, this demand will continue. I wanted to check in on the current watermelon market to see what is in store for the category, and I turned to Pacific Trellis Fruit for help.
“Our PureHeart® mini seedless watermelon is in peak production but with limited availability to the open market. Things are very tight as we look to transition growing areas to Hermosillo, Mexico,” said Jeff Nichol, Senior Sales Executive. “Our Sugar Daddy® conventional and organic full-size seedless watermelon is also showing tight supplies for the balance of the summer.”
Pacific Trellis currently grows watermelon in Huron and Knights Landing, California, and the Chihuahua, Mexico, region through the end of September.
As Jeff already noted, it will be transitioning to the Hermosillo region in October.
To keep watermelon programs stocked, Jeff offered advice to buyers.
“Good communication and planning are the key to a successful watermelon program. Conversations about their needs for the season usually occur in October for the May to October deal and in February/March for the winter season of November to April,” he explained.
Time is of the essence for planning out watermelon deals, so be sure to hop on the phone with a Pacific Trellis rep soon.
