Mexican tomato growers have recently presented a proposal to the U.S. Commerce Department in hopes of settling an agreement on exports to the country.
Lance Jungmeyer, President of Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, tells AndNowUKnow, the proposal states an 18-25 percent increase to the floor price, depending on the type of tomato.
“If Commerce accepts this, then we shouldn’t see a disruption in trade,” says Jungmeyer.
The proposal is currently under review by the U.S. Commerce Department, however November 1st will be the last day either side can present a case brief. Both parties will have an opportunity to rebut the case studies during the 10-day commenting period, ending on the 11th of November.
Jungmeyer also tells AndNowUKnow, consumers will not be affected by what they pay for at the grocery store and could potentially see a final agreement as early as November 12th if all decisions are made official.
“Its in their hands, we can try to do some influence but they are under a lot of critical pressure. “
