Vienna's Vegetable Orchestra and the Sounds of Fresh Produce

<p>There are many ways to make a living off of fresh produce. This niche is far smaller than most.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Carrot flutes, pumpkin basses, leek violins, leek-zucchini-vibrators, cucumberophones and celery bongos are just a few of their exports.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><iframe width="460" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/hpfYt7vRHuY?start=94" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">The Vegetable Orchestra was created in 1998. It is based in Vienna, Austria, and performs on instruments made of fresh vegetables.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">Instruments are created by hand by members of the orchestra, and their designs have continued to develop over time.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">"There are no musical boundaries for the Vegetable Orchestra," said a statement on the Orchestra's website. "The utilization of various ever refined vegetable instruments creates a musically and aesthetically unique sound universe."<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">According to the Orchestra's website, the group's music is a fusion of different styles which include contemporary, beat-oriented house tracks, experimental electronic, free jazz, noise, dub, just to name a few.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">For an encore at the end of their concert, the group offers the audience fresh vegetable soup made from "instrument" leftovers.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">The group consists of a mix of artists of different backgrounds, including musicians, visual artists, architects, designers, media artists, writers and sound poets who are apparently making a go at professional vegetable music-making. Ten musicians and 3 sound engineers create these organic tunes.<hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="legacyRuler"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding"><hr class="invisible minimal-padding">The World Carrot Museum's website currently lists 13 different musical groups which make their instruments from veggies. Is vegetable music a burgeoning genre?
