Wegmans Food Markets is announcing its plans to build stores in the suburbs of Richmond, Virginia.
Wegmans currently operates six stores in Virginia, with plans to open two in Richmond, and another in Charlottesville in the future.
"Over the years, we have had countless requests to open a Wegmans store in the Richmond area, so we are delighted to finally announce that we’re headed there," says Ralph Uttaro, Wegmans Senior Vice President of Real Estate. "We look forward to the day when we can welcome customers to our stores and deliver on our promise of incredible customer service, the best ingredients, restaurant-quality prepared foods, and consistent low prices."
The newly announced stores will be similar in size and design to Wegmans’ current Virginia stores, which range from 120,000 to 140,000 sq. ft. The two sites are about 11 miles apart and will be located in Midlothian and Short Pump, Virginia.
Each of the Richmond-area stores is expected to create 550-600 new full- and part-time jobs.
A construction timeline and projected opening date for both stores won't be determined until all necessary approvals have been made, according to Wegmans officials.
Wegmans is an 83-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
