Well-Pict has launched into its California strawberry season with new proprietary varieties in the works and a promising season ahead. With mostly mild winter weather in the state, the company is expecting a great season in Oxnard, California as well as Santa Maria, as Well-Pict moves into the region. In addition, with a late Easter this year, there will be good promotable volumes in and around the holiday’s promotional period.

“Everything has come on about three weeks early this year with the warm and mild winter. The crop in Santa Maria is responding well to the rains with bigger volumes to be harvested towards the end of the month,” Dan Crowley, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, tells AndNowUKnow.

The company is also working on two new varieties in Well-Pict’s constantly evolving proprietary development program that will align with the company’s focus on enhanced flavor and an improved eating experience. The company is still in the early stages of wide-scale production with plans for a bigger expansion of the new proprietary varieties next year.

The much needed winter storms that are bringing relief to drought stricken California, are also bringing a few challenges to a ripening strawberry crop. Well-Pict has worked over the years to address these challenges while also helping to define the popular berry category.

One of Well-Pict’s many proprietary strawberries, variety 269, has many key attributes that include enhanced flavor and quality… as well as a rain resistant trait.

“Where some varieties were damaged by the 4-5 inches of rain this past week in Oxnard, our proprietary 269 barely felt any decrease in production,” Crowley, notes.

“While short term, there may be some mild effect to volumes,” Crowley reflects, “long term, this will do wonders for this year's overall crop.”

Stay tuned to AndNowUKnow as we follow Well-Pict's evolving berry program.

Well Pict
