ORLANDO, FL - Winn-Dixie is doing its part to tackle the national epidemic of diabetes. The company is joining the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance, according to a recent press release. The initiative's objective is to tip the scales against the diabetes, pre-diabetes and obesity crisis through increased access to community-based programs that utilize evidence-based methods to help in the prevention and control of diabetes. In 29 select Winn-Dixie stores in Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa, pharmacists will be assisting patients enrolled in the Alliance's Diabetes Control Program to find better ways to manage diabetes and stick to their physicians' recommendations.

The pharmacists will also educate diabetes patients on how to reduce the risk of developing complications, like cardiovascular, kidney and eye disease. To start the process, enrolled patients will begin with an initial visit with an in-store pharmacist who will then provide quarterly consultations in order to evaluate their success. Their prescribed regimens and test results for blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol, will be part of the review process. Other partners in the Alliance are UnitedHealth Group, the Y, Walgreens, Novo Nordisk, Albertsons, and Kroger.

John Fegan, Winn-Dixie Vice President, Pharmacy, states, "Diabetes is an epidemic that affects millions of people across the country." He continues, "By joining the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance, Winn-Dixie is able to offer participating patients the support and resources they need to help them tackle this disease and improve their health."

www.winndixie.com
